Dispensation fee, also known as touring exemption fee or dispensation fee

In the past, a journeyman had to pay a fee to the guild – sometimes also to the poor fund – if he wanted to set up as a self-employed tradesman without being able to prove that he had completed the years of travel prescribed by the guild statutes. The years of travel served to acquire additional knowledge and skills – in a time when there was only scanty knowledge transfer through books and almost no vocational schools – and thus to increase the cost-effectiveness (the ratio of cost to performance) of the craft activity. – In some areas, male residents used to pay a one-time levy to be exempted from the conscription call (calling into service of troops). – A tax levied by the church to be exempted from certain prohibitions under church law, such as marriage among second-degree relatives. – Sometimes also said of exemption money, namely in general the monetization (monetisation: conversion into monetary payment) of a personal duty (Fron; soccage) to be performed until then to benefits of various kinds. – See allod money, beggar’s bell, service money, redemption, substitute money, flag money, calf money, cheese money, nonagium, orphan money, death money, widow money, guild money.
