Counterfeit protection (counterprofiling of counterfeit banknotes)

As part of a central bank’s banknote management, the task of – preventing the counterfeiting of paper money altogether, if possible, and – removing counterfeit banknotes from circulation. – The first task is performed by guilloches, watermarks, three-dimensional images (= holograms), metal threads, fibers that light up when exposed to light (= fluorescent), special papers or plastic material with mottled fibers, window money, hole numbers (= tiny perforation in the banknote burned in with a laser) and the installation of a readable semiconductor chip. This chip stores a serial number; scanners can then use this identifier to determine the authenticity of the banknote beyond doubt. Privacy groups and data protectors object to chips in banknotes because security checks reveal who has which banknotes in their pockets. – See Banknote Committee, Banknote Management, Banknote Value Limitation, Bridge-Abneysches Phenomenon, Chip Card, Card Validation Code, European Forum on Retail Payment Security, Window Money, Guilloche, Super Notes, Circulation Ability, Central Bank Anti-Counterfeiting Working Group, – See Deutsche Bundesbank Annual Report 2006, p. 99 f.
