Atomic settlement is a method of exchanging interdependent assets or obligations without allowing only one side of the exchange to take effect. The system coordinates the linked transfers so that a failed or incomplete exchange is unwound or prevented, reducing the period in which either participant is exposed to the other’s performance risk. This operational feature does not, on its own, establish when the parties’ obligations become legally binding, irrevocable, or enforceable.
