Iron money

Auch in: DE FR

In numismatics, all means of payment – coins, and more rarely rods: slim cylinders of metal, as in some areas of Africa – whose substance is entirely or predominantly iron. – Pure iron is destroyed by rust (oxidation: the metal decomposes into a reddish-brown, friable substance). The iron coins put into circulation especially after the First World War (1914 to 1918) were therefore covered with a thin layer of other metal (nickel, copper) (plated, as the technical term here is called). Very old iron coins – such as from Sparta – are today usually sealed with lacquer by museums and collectors. – In ancient documents, a payment in cash that a prisoner had to pay for his imprisonment, also written ice money. – A perpetual obligation to pay, also called Eisengült.
