Older name for a levy which
– the landlord demanded from the tenant (lessee), and which was to be paid either in goods – such as wood, grain, hay – or in money; – to the (upper)
The term was used to refer to the landowner’s right to the land; – and in a broad sense then also to any kind of tax. – In the past, in particular, a tribute in kind or, after its redemption, a payment obligation in cash for the use of a real estate encumbered with a reallast. The term “Reallast” (charge on real estate) refers to the encumbrance of a plot of land in such a way that recurring payments are to be made to the beneficiary from the land. – See impost, detz, Frongeld, Gebühr, Impost, Zehnt.
