HOI: Reading Proficiency Level 3, Private schools is an opportunity-equity indicator for pupils enrolled in private schools. It shows whether reaching reading proficiency level 3 is associated with personal or household circumstances, rather than being broadly attainable across the pupil population. The measure considers differences linked to gender, parents’ education, the school’s region, the father’s occupation and household wealth, alongside the proportion of pupils who reach the proficiency threshold. Its value rises when attainment is more widespread and when disparities between these groups are smaller. The index thus captures both the prevalence of the educational outcome and the extent to which access to it varies with background characteristics; it is not simply an average reading score.
