The Human Opportunities Index (HOI) for Mathematics Proficiency Level 2 in private schools indicates whether pupils’ attainment of that benchmark is associated with their social and demographic circumstances. It combines the proportion of pupils who reach the level with a distributional adjustment: the index is lower when attainment is concentrated among particular groups. The circumstances considered are gender, parental education, the school’s region, the father’s occupation and household assets. Wealth is represented by an index constructed from household assets. A higher result may reflect a larger proportion of pupils reaching the benchmark, narrower differences between circumstance groups, or both; it does not necessarily mean that both components have changed.
