Anglo-Saxon weight measure for precious metals. 1 troy ounce and also called fine ounce = 31.1034768 grams; troy from the French city of Troyes on the Seine, formerly an important trading and trade fair city. – In the EU, this unit of measurement is not permitted in commercial transactions. Also for precious metals, the weight must be indicated in values of metrication – i.e. grams, decagrams and kilograms. Only for Great Britain there is (still) an exception regulation. It led to suppliers from other EU countries opening a branch in England, only to be able to continue to offer in ounces from there. – See assay stamp, carat, tola, ounce.
