European Payment Union (EPU)

Paris-based institution founded in 1950, whose main objective was to bring the participating currencies to convertibility as quickly as possible; this was achieved as early as 1958. An important step in this direction was multilateral clearing. Technical processing was the responsibility of the Bank for International Settlements. The U.S. supported the EZU by providing a generous supply of USD 350 million. – See ECU, EEA, unit of account, European.
