Discount ticket, trading stamp
A gummed stamp similar to a small postage stamp that used to be issued by retailers for cash purchases (cash buying). The stamps were stuck in a discount booklet (passbook) or on a discount card (payback card). A full discount book could then be redeemed when purchasing goods. – The purpose of the savings stamps was – to counteract the very widespread practice of buying on credit (Ankreiden; chalking up: taking on credit) in the German retail trade and in a – to strengthen customer loyalty, thereby preventing shoppers from migrating to – consumer cooperatives with generally high rebates or – to department stores with sometimes considerably lower net prices. – See cover letter rebate.
