Schöffengeld (adjunct’s fee; lay judge allowance)

An expense allowance to which those persons in German rural communities who had to support the community leader in an honorary capacity and represent him in his absence (adjuncts; Schöffen) were formerly legally entitled. – A fee, usually based on the number of days of a meeting and the distance traveled, for the participation of knowledgeable persons in administrative and judicial bodies, such as in mining (Bergschöffe [mine inspector] in Bergverhör [barmote]: Panel that heard disputed factual issues arising in mining), also called elevator money and thing money…. – Remuneration for assessors (jurors) in courts, also called court money. – See Bankgeld, Dreidingsgeld, Gerichtsgeld, Justitiengeld.
