Finanzbegriff

Renationalization and disintegration

A term that emerged in connection with EMU around 2012 to describe the business policy of European banks to lend only to domestic companies. This counteracts European financial market integration. The reason for this phenomenon is the fact that the macroeconomic environment of some EMU member states has deteriorated alarmingly and institutions fear a high risk of default, especially as creditors have had to waive a large part of their claims in the course of the rescue measures for Greece and Cyprus, for example, as part of a debt haircut. As a result, for example, a medium sized firm in northern Italy that is very successful on the global market is currently (in summer 2013) receiving credit – if at all – at far higher interest rates than its competitor in neighboring Austria. This is a distortion of competition and unacceptable for a single market. – See banking union, expropriation, cold, financial market integration, Giovanni barriers, Greek crisis, home bias, harmonization of laws, directive on
