Postal savings book

Savings book issued by Postbank – formerly known in Germany as Postscheckamt from its founding in 1909 until 1978, then renamed Postgiroamt in 1989; since the end of 2010, Deutsche Bank AG has been Postbank’s majority shareholder. – In principle, the passbook is a credit account without a fixed term. The customer is issued a physical passbook. Account transactions such as deposits, withdrawals and interest credits are entered in this passbook; however, online forms of the passbook are now also available. – The postal savings book used to be considered the most popular form of savings among the lower and middle classes of society. Even henchmen, farmhands, maids, domestic servants and foreigners were less reluctant to enter one of the post offices, which were once densely networked across town and country, than to open the door of a savings bank or even a bank. Moreover, post office counters used to be open on Saturdays as well. Before there were ATMs, this was a crucial competitive advantage. – See megamergers, traveler’s letter of credit, savings book, savings box, savings interest, Aunt Milly.
