Intermediation

In the context of a financial system, usually refers to the fact that institutions assume the mediation function between the supply of and demand for credit, i.e. they reliably mediate between savers and investors (intermediation supposes the existence of financial institutions like banks, mutual funds, insurance companies, etc., that collect excess financial resources from various economic agents to invest them in the securities issued by the economic agents with the financing needs). Whether and to what extent (which?; which?) banks actually still play this role today is the subject of many papers and studies. – See disintermediation, financial system, bank-oriented, financial system, capital market-oriented, maturity transformation, core function, banking.
