The HOI for Mathematics Proficiency Level 3 assesses how evenly children attain a specified standard of mathematical competence. Its value reflects both the proportion of children reaching that standard and the extent to which attainment varies with their social and economic background. The calculation considers gender, parents’ educational attainment, the region in which the school is located, the father’s occupation and household assets. An increase in the index may result from higher overall attainment, smaller disparities between these groups, or both. The measure therefore separates the general level of educational achievement from differences associated with children’s circumstances.
