Exhaustion of reserves

In the context of statutory health insurance, this refers to the fact that the insurers will soon lose their reserves due to aging. – Either the contributions have to be drastically increased, according to calculations from the current 15.5 percent to 21.5 percent in 2060, or the state must subsidize the sickness funds from the national budget. – A third option would be to cut health insurance benefits sharply (a drastic reduction of health insurance benefits). Each of these options has a significant impact on the national economy as a whole, especially since the volume of spending by the statutory health insurance funds accounted for about seven percent of gross domestic product in 2014. – See age dependency ratio, health care spending, Japan syndrome, Methuselah syndrome, sustainability, capital flight, risk aversion, shadow debt, public debt, aging, senescence. – Cf. Monthly Report of the Deutsche Bundesbank of July 2014, p. 31 ff. (detailed presentation; many overviews and tables; p. 49 ff. listing of important related legal sources).
