Decision on a by-case basis
In the wake of the subprime crisis and the resulting global financial crisis, the term used to describe the decision of a central bank or government to rescue a bank threatened with insolvency by means of a special measure. – By October 2008 at the latest, it became clear that this approach would not be able to halt the loss of confidence in the financial markets. The states therefore decided to launch a large-scale rescue package, granting aid to all affected institutions upon request. – See Bear Stearns bankruptcy, Financial Market Stabilization Agency, first mover bonus, Northern Rock debacle, rescue.
