The Bonn-based agency’s responsibilities include the taxation of German residents with foreign income and the tax audit of large companies. Other responsibilities include the supervision of the family benefit equalization scheme, the supervision of the granting of the old-age pension allowance, the payment of salaries for all judges, civil servants, employees, workers and pension recipients of the Federal Government with the exception of the Federal Armed Forces and the Foreign Office, the accounting of incidental wage costs for various departments of the Federal Administration, the supervision of the Interest Rate Discount Act, administrative assistance for domestic and foreign authorities, and the operation of the computer center of the Federal Finance Administration and the Information Center for Foreign Tax Relations. – See Interest Information Regulation.

Aufgaben der Behörde mit Sitz in Bonn sind unter anderem die Besteuerung der Inländer mit Auslandseinkünften sowie die steuerliche Betriebsprüfung von Grossunternehmen. Weitere Obliegenheiten sind die Fachaufsicht des Familienleistungsausgleichs, die Fachaufsicht über die Gewährung der Altersvorsorgezulage, die Bezügezahlung für alle Richter, Beamten, Angestellten, Arbeiter und Versorgungsempfänger des Bundes mit Ausnahme der Bundeswehr und des Auswärtigen Amtes, Abrechnung von Personalnebenkosten (incidental wage costs) für verschiedene Ressorts der Bundesverwaltung, Kontrolle des Zinsabschlaggesetzes, Amtshilfe für in- und ausländische Behörden sowie Betrieb des Rechenzentrums der Bundesfinanzverwaltung und der Informationszentrale für steuerliche Auslandsbeziehungen. – Siehe Zinsinformationsverordnung.
