Former levy in cities to pay the guards (guardians, guardsmen, shield guards; city ward, sentry). – Formerly, in rural communities, a payment to be raised by the village community to remunerate – the cattle drover (cattle drover) or – the field guard (Flurschützen, Bannwart, Pfänder, Grünhut; field guard). – Earlier apportionment to a protective cooperative (Schutzvereinigung; clientship): an association for the preservation of common economic purposes, as among fishermen, forest owners, or factory owners. – See Flurgeld, Hägergeld, Hamegeld, Wachtgeld.
