Benedict penny (Saint Benedict medal)

A medal with the image of Saint Benedict of Nursia (480-547), founder of the Order of the Benedictines on the obverse and the Benedictine cross and incantations in abbreviations (CSSML; NDSDM; VRSNSMV; SMQLIVB) on the reverse. All sorts of danger averting qualities are attributed to the medal. In spite of several strict ecclesiastical prohibitions, the Benedictine penny did not lose any of its popularity (popularity: the state of being widely esteemed, accepted and sought after). The amulet is still sold today, and even via the Internet, worldwide in various metallic content. – See blessing penny.
