Begrüssungsgeld (welcoming money; sign-on-benefit; welcome bonus)
During the division of Germany until 1989, paid to all persons entering the Federal Republic of Germany.
The amount in DEM paid to citizens of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR: the former East German Socialist state of workers and farmers; the refuge of peace and socialism) and to ethnic Germans from Poland. – One-time payment made by municipalities to parents at the birth of a child. – A sum paid by many municipalities (currently Berlin, Oldenburg, Potsdam) to students when they move their primary residence to the university city. This is because, via the so-called “statistical increase of citizen”, the municipality in question then receives correspondingly more funds via the financial equalization scheme. – In some industries, this is the customary payment to a new customer who switches to the company in question or to the new system, especially in the IT sector and among energy suppliers; here, too, it is often difficult to draw the line between this payment and a poaching fee. – See douceur, godfather money, bribe.

Während der Teilung Deutschlands bis 1989 an alle in die Bundesrepublik Deutschland einreisenden
Bürger aus der damaligen Deutschen Demokratischen Republik (GDR: the former EastGerman Socialist state of workers and farmers; Arbeiter- und Bauernstaat, the refuge of peace and socialism; der Hort des Friedens und des Sozialismus) sowie an Deutschstämmige aus Polen (ethnic Germans from Poland) ausbezahle Summe in DEM. – Von Gemeinden an Eltern bei der Geburt eines Kindes einmalig geleistete Zahlung. – Von vielen Gemeinden (wie derzeit Berlin, Oldenburg, Potsdam) an Studierende bezahlte Summe, wenn diese ihren Erstwohnsitz in die Universitätsstadt verlegen. Denn über die sog. “Einwohner-Veredelung” (statistical increase of citizen) erhält die betreffende Gemeinde über den Finanzausgleich dann entsprechend mehr Mittel zugewiesen. – Von Unternehmen an (leitende) Mitarbeiter beim Eintritt in den Dienst bezahlte Summe; oft ein verstecktes Abwerbegeld. – In manchen Branchen übliche Zahlung an einen Neukunden (new customer), der zu der jeweiligen Firma bzw. in das neue System – vor allem in der IT-Branche und bei Energieversorgern (energy supplier) – wechselt; auch hier ist die Grenze zum Abwerbegeld oft nur schwer zu ziehen. – Siehe Douceur, Patengeld, Schmiergeld.
