Carat and also Kirat (carat)

Fineness designation for gold. Pure gold is called 24 karat; in older literature also called obryzum, obrissum and obrussum (obrussum: finest gold). – A 22-carat gold alloy thus contains 916 thousandths of pure gold, a 19-carat 750 thousandths. – Weight measure for gemstones; 1 carat = 0.2053 grams. Small stones are usually measured in points, where 1 point is equal to one hundredth of a carat, so 1 ct = 100 points. – See alliage, assay stamp, diamonds, precious copper, precious metals, gemstones, colored stones, jewels, London Good Delivery Standard, coin gold, pennyweight, troy-ounce, ounce.
