Vault bill (exchequer bill)

Generally, until the 19th century, pure paper money issued by the state administration without compulsory acceptance; also known as a pay voucher. However, the fact that the voucher could be used to redeem state claims (duties; taxes) made it very similar in use to the normal paper money that could still be redeemed in precious metals at that time. – In particular, paper money issued in Prussia between 1806 and 1809 – see Treasury notes.
