Titular church debut spending

If in former times the pope appointed (created) a cardinal and assigned him a titular church – namely one of the churches in the city of Rome, – then the cardinal had conventionally for the faithful belonging to his titular church to organize a feast, called LA FACIATA. Old and young, rich and poor, Hudel and Hädel feasted at elaborate
orchestral music on two evenings lavishly at the expense of the new cardinal. It was not until 1771, at the instigation of Cardinal François-Joachim de Bernis (1715-1794), that this custom was abolished, amid grumbling from the people of Rome, and the sum set aside for it was put to beneficial uses. – See indulgence money, annuities, dispensational money, cathedral money, church money, offering money, St. Peter’s penny, procuration money, school money, seminary money.
