Short position
A short position in an exchange-traded asset that has not yet been closed out by the purchase of an opposite position (selling a borrowed asset [an item the seller does not own], with the expectation that the price will fall, at which time the asset would be bought back in order to make a profit. The market risk on a short position is the risk of an increase in market value of the asset). – See spread, dedicated short bias, short call, short sale, future, long position, position, uncovered, short, short selling, short selling fund.
