Saving
Generally, the non-consumption of income and usually related to private households (the portion of household income not used in consumption expenditure). This does not initially take into account – why consumption is foregone and – how the portion of income not used for consumption is invested. – In youth language, also money spent on unnecessary things (superfluous items), derived from the silly advertising (canvassing ballyhoo; media hullabaloo) that potential customers would only ever save money by making a purchase. – See savings, money saving behavior, money cutting, hoarding, consumer spending, consumer money, account saving, minimum estimate of future needs, Schumpeter theorem, savings deposits, savings rate, thrift, government debt, consumption-reducing. – Cf. the definitions as well as the stock and growth figures under the heading “Financial and nonfinancial accounts,” subheading “Annual saving, investment and financing” in the “Euro area statistics” part of the respective ECB Monthly Bulletin; ECB Annual Report 2010, pp. 70 ff. (Household saving behavior since 2000; overviews).
