Redemption payment (turn tail)
Formerly a payment for the redemption of a marriage. The fine was to be paid – as a payment in kind with a fixed number of cattle (= heifer: a mature female bovine younger than about eighteen months) or – with the monetary equivalent for it (equivalent value). – Penalty fee for soldiers who did not fight perseveringly enough during a battle and left the battle ground prematurely.
