Legal opinion (also used in German in this context; less frequently translated as legal opinion)
In relation to the financial market in general, the expert opinion of a specialist lawyer with regard to an engagement, and here in particular with regard to a contractual commitment in a foreign language and in a foreign jurisdiction. – Investment management companies often employ a staff of contract lawyers from the respective jurisdictions; even large institutions often employ legal advisors from different regions of the world. – Sometimes there are also corresponding agreements between globally active institutions. Then the respective partner resident in the country checks the agreement of a foreign partner related to the domestic legal system through the experts of his house. – The high costs of legal advice have recently led to a series of standard-form contracts (model contracts) – usually in English – being drawn up by leading international associations of financial market players for almost every common transaction and used as a basis for such transactions. – See European Master Agreement, International Swaps and Derivates Association, leveraged buy-out risks, choice of law, conflict of law.
