Illegitimate stroken coins (illegitimate mint mark)

Coins produced in ancient documents by minters and put to their own use from the stock of precious metal given to them by the minting authority, of which the minting authority embezzled a portion. – The unlawful restrike of a well-known, widely used coin by another mint. The aim was to introduce the imitation into the circulation area of the prototype. However, in order not to be guilty of a very harshly punished formal coin counterfeiting (direct counterfeiting), the pieces were rarely copied in their entirety. Mostly, parts of the coin images or the inscriptions – occasionally only tiny mintmarks invisible to the naked eye – indicate the real origin of the coins. – See money, evil, wardein.
