Giro center (central giro institution)

In Germany, initially associations of municipal savings banks and administrations on a public basis. The original task was to maintain the municipal cash clearing and transfer system (giro; Giro). Since then, the Girozentralen have outgrown these tasks and developed into top institutions of the German savings banks, from 1998 onwards usually called – and so also in the statistics of the Deutsche Bundesbank – Landesbank.
