Free float

In the case of shares of a particular class, the portion that is traded on the stock exchange, i.e. not held permanently in fixed ownership (the proportion of shares available to purely financial investors. Free float does not include shares that are kept for other reasons, i.e. control, sentimental attachment or buy-and-hold-strategies). – See claw-back clause, tender offer, squeeze-out, voting rights database, secondary placement.
