Door money
In the past, the faithful were asked to pay a fee for the maintenance of the building (upkeep of the church) when entering the church for worship. Repeatedly, the popes emphatically prohibited door money, and a corresponding prohibition was promulgated (canonical) for the entire Catholic Church. The Protestant Churches also did not allow door money for attending church services. These prohibitions achieved that the access to the acts of worship (church services) remained free for everyone. Today, the majority of parishes ask for a voluntary contribution at the end of the service for the upkeep of the church buildings. – A fee charged by some parishes for tourists (sightseers) entering old buildings such as castles, palaces or historic town halls. The revenue from the door fee is used to maintain the building structure (basic structure, building stock). – In discotheques, dance bars and similar places, the amount to be paid upon entry, usually in the course of the identity check (asking for identification, proof of age), the receipt of which is often certified by a stamp on the back of the hand. – At some events – including concerts and theater plays – a fee is charged for people who wish to enter late, after the doors have closed (closing time). Experience has shown that an appropriately sized fee can ensure that visitors arrive on time and that the event is not disrupted by the ongoing influx of regular latecomers. – Amount begged for at doorsteps by dubious door-to-door charity fundraisers (charity muggers), usually with the connotation that the visited persons donate something to get rid of the fundraiser. – Another term for the entrance fee – see seat money, gate money.
