Croatia accession
On July 1, 2013, Croatia became the 28th member state of the EU, but not – as has been repeatedly misinterpreted – into the euro area. However, because a good 90 percent of the banking sector in Croatia is in foreign hands – and here again mainly in the hands of institutions from the EU – it should be easier for the country to join the euro area at a later date. – Cf. ECB Monthly Bulletin, July 2013, p. 19 ff. (detailed analysis of the Croatian economy; development prospects).
