Coin, counterfeit and subaerat (manipulated coin, subaerat)
Coin made of inferior metal at the core, with a plating of gold or silver on the outside. This is also referred to as a lined coin in the older literature. Such a coinage is supposed to simulate hard money made of pure precious metal. However, these are often not counterfeit coins, but adulterations on behalf of the mint lord. They are already found in masses on Roman denarii of the 1st century AD. – See assay stamp, billonnage, bleiling, bullion, doublé coin, coin, counterfeit, coin striking, wardein.
