Lighting duty
A tax that used to be paid on the artificial lighting of a room. It was in the tradition of the candle wax tax (candle wax impost). The basis of the levy was the number of lighting fixtures or each electric light bulb (bulb), including the rear brake light on automobiles. In Germany, the lighting tax was abolished at the beginning of 1993. – Its reintroduction in a modified form was repeatedly demanded from around 2000 onwards in the course of efforts to save energy. However, in addition to the energy tax already levied, such a tax would place a disproportionately high burden on the use of lighting. – See candle money, light money.
