Universal bank (all-purpose bank, universal bank, multi-purpose bank, general bank)

An institution that basically offers all financial services. – In the discussion about the causes of the subprime crisis in 2007 and the financial crisis that followed it, some experts recommended that universal banks should be prohibited by law and, in general, that the separation banking system should be introduced worldwide. This should prevent customers’ deposits from being put at risk for risky transactions. Experts are still arguing about the advantages and disadvantages of such separation. – See specialized banking system, Glass-Steagall Act, investment bank, separation banking system.
