Porterage in older documents also apportage and portage (porterage; compensation payment for loss of earnings)
Generally, the payment for carrying burdens by a porter. – In some areas in particular also the payment to those men who carried the coffin in case of deaths in a village community (pallbearer, coffin-bearer) and had to be compensated for the loss of earnings. In some places, however, the money required for this was not to be raised directly by the surviving dependants. Rather, the payment was made by the rural burial insurance. This was a mutual insurance policy covering the villagers. In the event of a death, the insurance company paid a contribution to the expenses incurred in the event of a bereavement. – See Ankergeld, Betgeld, Hafengeld, Kaigeld, Konduktgeld, Kapplaken, Krangeld, Ladegeld, Lastgeld, Liegegeld, Leuchtturmgeld, Lotsengeld, Mützengeld, Raumgeld, Sperrfrachtgeld, Staugeld, Sterbekasse, Tonnengeld, Tontine, Wägegeld.
