Legegeld and Leggeld (basic capital; price surcharge; guild membership fee; court fee; storage charges, bail money)

A term appearing very frequently in the older literature in various meanings – basic capital, working capital (current operating capita) of an individual merchant or a company; – surcharge on the price at sale or auction (gant, in the older financial language also lizitation; licitation: the act of offering for sale to the highest bidder), a premium; – regular membership fee into the guild treasury, guild money; – sum to be deposited with the court before the commencement of proceedings by the parties to secure the payment of court costs, court money; – reimbursement of expenses incurred in the storage of goods; – deposit of a sum before taking up a public office as detention money or bond, guarantee money.
