Godfather gift
In former times a gift, which the godfather or godmother – on the occasion of the administration of the respective sacrament or – in a broader sense also on other occasions – such as name day, birthday, graduation, apprenticeship, marriage – gave to the baptized or confirmed, – in former times mostly in the form of a gold coin; also called godfather money and godfather money (Gote = godfather; godfather). – See chrism money.
