Rumor spattering
In relation to the financial market, the deliberate and planned spreading of gossip with the purpose of – strengthening the reputation of one’s own company – for example: the Bahrain sovereign wealth fund will soon be joining us as a shareholder – or – damaging the reputation of competitors – for example: the public prosecutor’s office has been investigating dodgy dealings or shady transactions for weeks. – Planned rumors are fed with regard to experience by the middle management in leisure facilities such as golf and tennis clubs, sports clubs and bankers’ regulars’ tables, where employees of various companies from the financial sector meet. With regard to convention hotels, they have proven to be a favorable turnover point: Lodging establishments where employees from different institutions meet, especially at conferences and (organized by associations; organized in associations) training sessions. – Rumors of all kinds can also be spread and amplified via the Internet, often in a covert manner or disguised as questions in forums. Whether and to what extent special companies commissioned here – service providers with the business purpose of “looking after the interests” of third parties as clients – are involved is difficult to prove in individual cases. Insiders, however, suspect this in many cases. – See ad hoc announcements, dissemination, floor talk, frontrunning, secret tip, profit warning, infighting, Internet forums, Münchhausen, Baron, Twitter. – Cf. BaFin Annual Report 2012, p. 69 (monitoring of rumor mongering as part of the peer review on market abuse) and the respective BaFin Annual Report, chapter “International.”
