Golden rule

In ethics, the guiding principle of all action, including action and inaction on the financial market: namely, to avoid doing to others what you would not want them to do to you (the precept of doing to others as we would have them do to us). – In fiscal policy, the requirement that public deficits must not exceed public investment. Violation of this rule threatens inflation and stagnation; proper monetary policy becomes impossible. – In the case of pension funds, the stipulation that interest on retirement assets not exceed the rate of inflation. – See deficit ratio, fiscal policy, fiscal referendum, monetary policy, monetary value, budget deficit, debt brake, Stability and Growth Pact. – Cf. Deutsche Bundesbank Monthly Report of April 2005, pp. 23 ff.
