Godfather gift

In the past, a godfather (a man who becomes sponsor for a child at baptism) gave a gift of money to the godchild at the child’s birth or on later occasions such as first communion, confirmation or youth initiation ceremony. – Today, a payment made by some communities to families (with many children) on the birth of another child. – See welcome money, father’s money, New Year’s money.
