Death grant; funeral benefit; accural duty

Payment made by the employer to dependents in the event of the death of an employee. In Germany, civil servants used to continue to receive their (basic) salary for three months. – Sum paid out on the basis of a special contract with an insurance company in the event of death to cover expenses in connection with the funeral. Statutory health insurance funds in Germany no longer pay death benefits since the beginning of 2004. – In earlier times, also a levy payable by heirs on the death of a wealthy citizen, also called fallgeld, mortuar and Sterbepfundgeld: effectively an inheritance tax. – See Abzugsgeld, Fallgeld, Kurmutgeld.
