The aim is to drive up the price in order to be able to dictate the price to the buyers (acquiring such relative control of a commodity or share that its price can be manipulated. – In particular, the term for a situation on the stock exchange in which short sales of shares – more rarely also said of commodities and precious metals – by bearers considerably exceed the stock of the supply available on the market.
