Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht, BaFin (Federal Agency for Financial Markets Services Supervision)
The supervisory powers for – banks, – securities trading and – insurance business, as well as – the overarching areas and products of the financial markets (such as Internet business, asset management, investor and consumer protection, old-age provision funds) are vested in a single authority, which commenced its work in Germany on May 1, 2002, with dual headquarters in Frankfurt am Main and Bonn, replacing the previously sectoral (sectoral acting) supervisory authorities. This followed the increasingly apparent trend toward financial conglomerates. – The Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) is a public-law institution with legal capacity under federal law in the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Finance and employs around 2,400 staff. BaFin supervises about 2,700 credit institutions, 800 financial services institutions, and more than 700 insurance companies; read more at
