Ribbing (edge lettering)

A marking – often an inscription – on the outside edge of a coin. Marking was usually done during the production process for all coins of the same type. Sometimes, however, individual pieces were personally marked in this way by their owners (the inscription may be made by the owner of the coin). On older coins, the main purpose of fluting was to detect fraudulent trimming of the coin. – See legend, knurling, wipper.
