Peso effect
Around 1975, the MXN was firmly pegged to the USD, and the Mexican government at the time was pursuing what appeared to be a successful stability policy. Nevertheless, the MXN traded with a high deport on the futures exchanges. – The explanation is that market participants believed that the MXN was likely to depreciate based on fundamentals. This is why pessimistic expectations in a currency area are generally referred to as the “peso effect,” also known as the peso problem and the peso paradox. – See foreign exchange forward, report, swap rate, currency risk. – Cf. Rond 1975 was de MXN stevig gekoppeld aan de USD en voerde de toenmalige Mexicaanse regering een schijnbaar succesvol stabiliteitsbeleid. Niettemin werd de MXN met een hoge deportatie op de futuresbeurzen verhandeld. – De verklaring ligt in het feit dat de marktdeelnemers meenden dat een devaluatie van de MXN waarschijnlijk was als gevolg van de fundamentele gegevens. Daarom worden pessimistische verwachtingen in een valutazone doorgaans aangeduid als het “peso-effect”, ook bekend als het “peso-probleem” en de “peso-paradox”. – Zie valutatermijntransactie, verslag, swapkoers, valutarisico. – Cf.
