## Definition

HOI: Reading Proficiency Level 3 measures children’s attainment of Level 3 in the relevant reading assessment and the extent to which that attainment is shared across social and demographic groups. Its value reflects both the proportion of children reaching the benchmark and disparities associated with their circumstances. The groups are defined by gender, parents’ education, the school’s region, the father’s occupation and household wealth, with wealth represented by an asset-based index. A higher result indicates either that more children meet the proficiency standard, that attainment is distributed more evenly between the groups, or both.
