## Definition

In the older literature said of an adulterated coin, in which the core (inner part of the coin; in German also Pille and in old documents often called Blatte) was cast from lead or also from another inferior metal mixture. In this job extremely skillful unfaithful coiner covered the core with thinly beaten gold sheet (roll gold), so that the coin was indistinguishable from full-fledged gold coins in trade. Only when the metal coating became cracked through frequent use was the fraud discovered. - See assay stamp, billonnage, bullion, doublé coin, coin striking, wardein.
