## Definition

Generally, profit. - The positive difference between a company's market capitalization and its proprietary assets. - In Marxism, the surplus that the capitalist achieves in the production process. This is based on the (erroneous!) view that labor - and labor alone - creates value. Consequently, every thing is basically worth as much as there is labor in it (as "coagulated labor": labor theory of value). - The value added by a company (net value added); used as the basis for calculating the amount to be paid in value added tax (VAT; official designation: all-phase net sales tax with input tax deduction). - See fair value, mark-to-model approach, market value, plus making, profit, Rebbes, Tobin's Q, enterprise value, fair value, value added, time value.
